Can someone define to this 3 week newbie what the differences is in this terms? UTF/VAC and ANK all seem about the same. Why is NMR/NSN different? Seems choose the USPS has too countless codes and also no clear meaning on as soon as to use them. Also my co-workers couldn't offer me a clear answer.

You are watching: What does utf stand for on returned mail

Edit for clarification--I to be referring come in-house write-up office crate receptacle pitching.

UTF - can not to Forward. Use this once the addressee is quiet receiving mail in ~ an deal with and there is no forwarding stimulate on document or the the order has expired.

VAC - Vacant. Usage this when no one lives at the address.

ANK - Attempted, no Known. Usage this once a piece of mail is returned to you with no explanation (usually human being will compose "no longer at this address" ~ above the envelope, yet some people don't also bother v that).

NMR - No letter Receptacle. This one appears pretty self-explanatory

NSN/NSS - No together Number/Street. Additionally pretty me explanatory.

There are various other codes, yet these space the most typically used. The other one you can occasionally check out is DEC - Deceased.

Clarification...so I have actually a letter do the efforts to walk in a box...cardboard is up v a forwarding address, yet not the correct person. Therefore is it VAC (because package is closed), UTF since you can't front it, or ANK because I tried to provide the surname is no known? That's where I'm puzzled on the totality thing?

On NMR and NSN...if there's no physical mail receptacle wouldn't that be the same as no such number?

To me all these codes jumble into each other and also seem confusing.

Re: ank, ns would always attempt to forward before marking ank, uneven there is a box significant specifically with the names at that address. And also if forward does no go through, then utf. If they placed on over there no much longer lives here, absolutely attempt to front first.
